THE Southeast Atlantic Hydrographic Basin corresponds to one of the 12 hydrographic regions of Brazil.
It is formed by several sub-basins of which the following stand out: Paraíba do Sul Basin, Rio Doce Basin, Itapemirim River Basin, Itabapoana River Basin, Jucu River Basin and Ribeira de River Basin Iguape.
Characteristics and Importance
The Southeast Atlantic Hydrographic Basin occupies an area of 229 thousand km2, which corresponds to approximately 2.7% of the territory of Brazil.
It is present in the southeast region, in the states of Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro; and still covers a small part in the southern region of the country, on the coast of the state of Paraná.
It has great economic importance for the region, considered the most populous and developed in Brazil, with about 25 million inhabitants, where most live in urban areas (90%).
The most important hydroelectric plants installed in the region are: Henry Borden, Paraibuna, Funil, Aimoré, Nilo Peçanha, Mascarenhas and Porto Estrela.
This can already explain the devastation of the Biome found in the region, the Atlantic forest. One of the biggest concerns currently is the various environmental problems that the region presents, mainly caused by deforestation, accelerated urbanization and industrialization, which unbalance the ecosystem such as the siltation of rivers, the loss of fauna and flora and the water contamination.
A notorious example of one of the problems affecting the region is the lack of water in several places, since the demand is so great.
Depending on the location, the climate of the Southeast Atlantic hydrographic region can be tropical humid, subtropical humid or tropical at altitude.
