Origin of Children's Day in Brazil
In 1920, Federal Deputy Galdino do Valle Filho proposed the creation of a day to honor children.
Thus, in the government of President Arthur Bernardes, the National Children's Day was instituted through Decree No. 4,867, of November 5, 1924.
October 12th was chosen to honor the date on which Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas. The colonizer himself, who discovered America in 1492, named the continent the “children's continents”, as overseas lands were later discovered.
However, this date began to be celebrated decades later. In 1960, the famous Estrela toy factory and the store dedicated to children's products Johnson & Johnson joined in order to market more products.
Thus, they proposed the creation of a week that became known as “Robust Baby Week”.
It was from that moment that the date (proposed by the old decree) began to be celebrated and is currently one of the most famous in the country.
Today, this period is extremely profitable for many children's stores. Sales increase considerably in the month of October due to the celebration.
