Orpheus and the Lyre

Myth of Orpheus and Eurydice
Frederic Leighton, Orpheus and Eurydice (1864)

In addition to being a poet, Orpheus was a musician and singer. His father presented him with a lyre, which turned him into a dedicated musician. So, when he played it, anyone was enchanted and tranquil with its melody. In addition to human beings, animals and nature in general (trees, rivers, lakes, etc.) were fascinated by the sound of their notes.

Summary

Lost in love, Orpheus and Eurydice decided to get married. However, shortly before the wedding, Eurydice was bitten by a snake, while trying to flee from an admirer, Aristeus, which resulted in her death.

Disconsolate, Orpheus decided to descend into the underworld and ask Hades, god of the dead, and his wife Persephone, his beloved back.

Moved by the story and ecstatic with its music from his lyre, both decided to return her to her lover on one condition: that he did not look at her her until they reached the upper world.

Upon leaving the world of the dead, and suspicious of the agreement with the god of the underworld, he decided to look back and see if his beloved was following him. By disobeying Hades and Persephone, Eurydice was taken to the world of the dead, with no expectation of returning.

With deep sadness, Orpheus wandered for days without eating and drinking. Depressed, he decided never to love any woman again, which led to the fury of the maenads (bacchantes) who tried to conquer him.

No response from Orpheus, they decide to kill him. With his death, he finally manages to find his love. Legend has it that after his body was thrown into the river Ebro, he was buried near Mount Olympio and there where his mortal rectums lay, the nightingales sang beautiful songs.

In turn, the Maenads, angry women of Thrace, who decided to kill him were punished by the gods, who turned them into oaks and rocks.
