Its origins date back to the late 18th century, but it was replaced by the USSR flag from 1917 to 1991.
Origin
The origin of the Russian flag follows the development of the merchant and war navy. Ships needed to be identified on the high seas and so, nations began to make emblems for their ships.
It is said that during a trip to the Netherlands, King Peter the Great was enchanted by the flag of that country and decided to adopt it. He just took the precaution of reversing the order of colors so that the two pavilions were not exactly alike.
Thus, the tricolor flag was established as a naval ensign in 1799 and a civil ensign in 1803. In 1883, during the reign of Tsar Nicholas II, it would be the official flag of the entire Russian Empire.
With the victory of Russian revolution of 1917, this flag and all symbols of the monarchy were abolished. In this way, the new symbol of Russia, now integrated into the
USSR, became a red pavilion with hammer and sickle for 74 years. When did the end of the ussr, the Russian Parliament recovered the old tricolor flag.

- blue - king
- Red - People
With the end of the USSR and the appearance of the Russian Federation, the colors gained a new interpretation:
- White - Purity, Christian faith
- Blue - Truth, and the Mother of God, Mary
