The War of Biafra

Without a doubt one of the most dramatic and moving events in Africa was the Biafra War, which shocked the world with its striking and moving images of adults and children in a state of extreme malnutrition, or simply dead. The agent causing the war was a clash between two ethnic groups in Nigeria.
Nigeria became independent in 1960, formed by the reunion of the Ibo people with the Hausa people. The Ibos came from the province of Biafra, in the east of the country, and formed the elite of Nigeria. Generally speaking, they were the ones with the best jobs and the best salaries. In a 1966 coup d'état, a group of Ibo army officers seized power. However, in a counter-coup, the new government was overthrown and the Ibos began to be hunted and massacred throughout the country.
Those who managed to escape fled to their home province and declared themselves independent. Biafra province was very rich in oil. For this reason, the government would not accept their separation, given that it was the richest region in the country. Factor that resulted in a civil war that began in 1967 and ended in 1970.

Approximately one million people died, mostly Ibo. Biafra surrendered and was annexed again to the territory of Nigeria. Since the end of the civil war, the country has been ruled by the military, public administration is dominated by corruption.
