Lyrics from the Anthem of the Proclamation of the Republic

Be an unfolded canopy of light.
Under the wide expanse of these skies
This corner rebel that the past
Come redeem from the most vile labés!
Be a speaking glory hymn
Of hope, of a new future!
With visions of triumphs pack
Who for him fighting arise!

Freedom! Freedom!
Spread your wings over us!
of the fights in the storm
Let us hear your voice!

We don't even believe that slaves once
Has there been in such a noble Country...
Today the red flash of dawn
Find brothers, not hostile tyrants.
We're all the same! to the future
We will know, together, to take
Our august standard that, pure,
Shine, ovante, from the Fatherland on the altar!

Freedom! Freedom!
Spread your wings over us!
of the fights in the storm
Let us hear your voice!

If you need brave breasts
There is blood on our banner,
Living blood of the Tiradentes hero

Named this daring pavilion!
Messengers of peace, peace we want,
Our strength and power is of love
But from the war in the supreme trances
You will see us fight and win!

Freedom! Freedom!
Spread your wings over us!
of the fights in the storm
Let us hear your voice!

From Ipiranga it is necessary that the cry
Be a superb cry of faith!
Brazil has already emerged freed,
On the regal purples standing.
Hey, then, Brazilians forward!
Blond greens, let's harvest a lot!
Be our country triumphant,
Free land of free brothers!

Freedom! Freedom!
Spread your wings over us!
of the fights in the storm
Let us hear your voice!

Anthem of the Proclamation of the Republic - Subtitled

Origin of the Anthem of the Proclamation of the Republic

After the proclamation of the Republic, the government wanted to change several symbols and proposed a contest to choose the new national anthem. However, in the face of resistance, Marshal Deodoro chose to adopt the new anthem as the Republic's and keep the old one as the national anthem.

In order to create symbols of the new republican identity, the provisional government opens a contest to elect the official version of the National Anthem. This is held on January 20 of the same year, at the Teatro Lírico in Rio de Janeiro.

The winners were José Joaquim de Campos da Costa de Medeiros and Albuquerque, author of the lyrics, and Leopoldo Miguez, composer. This was written in an elaborate and boastful language and neither the lyrics nor the melody conquered the military and the population.

Anthem of the Proclamation of the Republic

Despite winning the contest, music by Leopoldo Miguez and lyrics by Medeiros and Albuquerque were not used to represent the nation. The military and the population felt identified by the melody of the old national anthem, which had been sung since 1822.

Thus, music and poetry were used to be the Anthem of the Proclamation of the Republic, through Decree No. 171, signed by the Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca on January 20, 1890.

However, it has fallen by the wayside and is rarely used on official ceremonies.

Authors of the Anthem of the Proclamation of the Republic

The author of the lyrics of the hymn was José Joaquim de Campos da Costa de Medeiros and Albuquerque (1867-1934). He was born in Recife (PE), on September 4, 1867.

José Joaquim had a privileged education, being a student of the historian Sílvio Romero, and completed his studies at the Academic School of Lisbon.

He was a teacher, journalist, politician, storyteller, poet, novelist, playwright, among others. He was part of the republican group that preceded the Proclamation of the Republic and, after the establishment of the new regime, he was appointed to public and administrative positions in the new government.

José Joaquim de Campos died in Rio de Janeiro/RJ, on June 9, 1934.

In turn, Leopoldo Miguez (1850-1902) was a renowned musician in his time, having completed his musical studies in Europe.

Born in Niterói (RJ), he composed symphonies, chamber music and vocals. In 1889 he was appointed director and professor at the National Institute of Music.
