Climate of the Midwest Region

The climate of the Midwest region of Brazil is the semi-humid tropical climate. Remember that the Midwest region is the second largest in the country, after the North region.

It covers three states in Brazil (Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, and the Federal District) and is the only one that is not bathed by the sea.

From October to March, the Midwest region receives a lot of rain and from April to September, a dry climate prevails.

Therefore, winter in the region is dry and has mild temperatures. Summer is hot and rainy. Temperatures can range from 40º C in the hottest months to around 15º C in the coldest months.

Climate Characteristics

O tropical weather is predominant in the region, with its main characteristics:

  • high temperatures
  • High rainfall (rain) in summer
  • Two well-defined seasons (dry and rainy)
  • high thermal range
  • hot and rainy summer
  • mild and dry winter

Attention!

Although the semi-humid tropical climate is the most prevalent in the region, in the Central Plateau the climate is tropical at altitude.

In the colder months, frost precipitation can occur due to the elevation of the place, which can reach altitudes above 1000 meters.

In the Amazon Forest region (northern Mato Grosso), the predominant climate is the humid equatorial, with high temperatures and high rainfall (rain).

Relief and Vegetation in the Midwest Region

Much of the region is located in the Central Plateau (Goiás and Federal District). Besides it, there is the Meridional Plateau (Mato Grosso do Sul and Goiás) and the Pantanal Plain (Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul).

The predominant vegetation of the Midwest region is the thick. Includes crooked trees (twisted trunks and branches) and presence of grasses.

In the north of Mato Grosso, we find part of the Amazon rainforest, the largest rainforest in the world. The forest vegetation is broadleaved (large and broad leaves) with tall trees and very dense vegetation.

In addition, much of the region is covered by the largest flooded plain in the world: the wetland. The Pantanal is also one of the largest biomes in the world, home to several species of fauna and flora.

As for hydrography, the Midwest Region is bathed by several rivers. They are part of the Amazon Basin, Tocantins Araguaia Basin, Paraná Basin and Paraguay Basin. The following rivers stand out: Xingu, Jurema, Tocantins-Araguaia, Paraná, Parnaíba and Paraguay.
