When did Father's Day appear?

Some writers say that tributes to parents were already performed in the Mesopotamia, but Father's Day is a modern celebration that appeared in the U.S, at the beginning of the 20th century. We believe that the person who idealized Father's Day was Smart Dodd Sound, an American artist who wrote children's books and poems.

Parents are important figures in raising their children, giving them love and attention.

She would have created Father's Day as a way to honor her father, William Franklin Smart, a man who raised his children alone after his wife, Ellen Smart, died during the birth of their sixth child. Sonora Dodd considered her father an example of the love and protection that a father figure can provide for his children.|1|.

Her idea of creating a commemorative date for her parents came when she attended a sermon at her church about the newly created date of Mothers Day, conceived by the American Anna Jarvis and celebrated for the first time in 1908. Sonora Dodd then proposed the creation of Father's Day in 1910, and its initial idea was that the celebration would take place on June 5th, on his father's birthday.

However, there was not enough time to prepare for the commemoration on that specific date, and it was only held in the June 19, 1910, on the third Sunday of the month. Sonora Dodd's celebration caught the attention of William Jennings Bryan, an influential American politician in the early 20th century who started to lobby for the official date.

This made the commemorative date created by Sonora Dodd gain national repercussion. In 1916, the President of the United States woodrowWilson went to Spokane, Dodd City, to celebrate Father's Day. He tried to make the date a national holiday, but he got no support from congressmen.

It took some time for Father's Day to be made official by the government as a commemorative date in the United States. In 1966, the president Lyndon Johnson recognized the celebration of the date on the third Sunday in June. In 1972, the president Richard Nixon issued a resolution making the third Sunday of June official as Father's Day and turning it into a national holiday.

Father's Day in Brazil

Thus, we now know that Father's Day was a commemorative date that emerged in the United States. She went brought to Brazil in 1953 by idea of Sylvio Bhering, an advertiser who ran the newspaper The globe and Rádio Globo. Bhering's aim was to use the date to ensure greater advertising collection for newspaper and radio.

Bhering's proposal mentioned the Father's Day celebration on August 16, and the first celebration of its kind took place on August 16, 1953. The justification for choosing this date was that August 16th is celebrated Saint joaquim, father of Mary and grandfather of Jesus Christ.

Father's Day appeared in the United States in 1910 and arrived in Brazil in the 1950s.

Bhering's proposal aimed to reach only Rio de Janeiro, but it became popular throughout the country. However, a fixed date for Father's Day was not very practical for the celebration because it could fall on weekdays (weekdays), making it more complicated. So the date was moved to the second sunday in august, just as Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May.

In Brazil, Country Day will be celebrated in the coming years on these days:

  • 2020: August 9th

  • 2021: August 8th

  • 2022: August 14th
