How does our hair grow? Understanding how hair grows

The human being is the only mammal that has hair that grows non-stop. The hairs of other mammals grow to the required length, while ours grow for years.
Our hair is produced inside a tube-shaped structure called a hair follicle. At the bottom of this tube is another structure called the root. At the root we find cells that are constantly multiplying. As these cells multiply, they push the hair out of the skin, causing hair to grow. Our hair is made up of a protein called keratin. Keratin involves the strands of our hair making them more resistant and stronger.

On our scalp there are about five million hair follicles.

Birth, growth/rest and fall is the continuous process our hair goes through. It can grow up to 1.5 cm per month. While some hairs are growing, others are growing in our head (and may grow during six years or even more) and some are falling, giving the opportunity for another thread to be born in their place.
This cycle happens throughout life, but as we age our hair will stop growing.

Some people believe that some sympathies make the hair grow, like cutting the ends or not washing your hair for a few days. But this is just a belief, because the best way to make your hair grow is to have a balanced diet.

For our hair to grow healthily we need to have a good diet.
