The discovery of an oil reserve superfield off the Brazilian coast may mark a new stage in the country's energy field, as it guarantees self-sufficiency and reaches volumes surpluses that can be destined for export, energy production, more specifically, oil, in addition to being extremely important for the development of any nation.
The announcement of the discovery took place on November 8, 2007. Based on research and preliminary studies, it is known that the oil reserve will promote an increase significant in oil production, something around 50% of current production, which is 14 billion barrels.
The place where the data for the research was collected is called Tupi and is located 250 kilometers off the coast of Rio de Janeiro.
From the first studies on the deposit, it was found that the reserve is concentrated in a depth of 7,000 meters below the ocean, it is estimated that there are 5 to 8 billion barrels of Oil and Gas. Fossil ores from Tupi are of superior quality compared to that extracted in the Campos basin, as it is a lighter oil.
Despite the euphoria resulting from the new discovery, it is necessary to develop a series of actions to reach the starting point of ore extraction. The forecast is that an intense and in-depth study will be carried out for two years to unravel precisely the potential of the deposit, given that, the expectation to start exploration will be due to around 2013.
With the publication of the discovery, the country was included in the select group of countries that have the largest reserves of oil in the world, from now on, Brazil is ranked in the seventeenth place among the great producers.
The Brazilian president stated that he wants the country to join OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) and that he will fight for that to happen. Without a doubt, a discovery of this proportion leaves any nation euphoric, now it remains to be seen what will be the fate of this important resource, moreover, how it will positively interfere in the lives of Brazilians.
