Conducting some verbs. Verbal Regency Characteristics

Of course, talking about verbal regency does not represent something unusual, given that the text is available to you Verbal Regency: Basics”, worked on one of the many meetings we've had. However, it seems never too much to review some concepts, even because, acting in this way, we expand the knowledge that we already have, as well as we feel better prepared to further improve the knowledge that are to come. So, as you already know, theverbal Regency it is characterized by the relationship established between verbs and those terms that complete their meaning, which may or may not be intermediated by the use of the preposition.

Based on this principle, especially because you need to be prepared to exercise your skills in situations communicative actions taken as specific (and this happens both in speech and in writing), is that from now on you will get to know a little more the regency of some verbs, so to put to good use, always. So, notice some of them, considered as the main ones:

FLIRT

Contrary to what many people believe is the right way, whoever dates, date someone, NOT WITH ANYONE. Thus, we affirm that this verb is characterized as direct transitive. Look at the example:

Pedro is dating Beatrice.

TO PREFER

This also happens with this case, because in colloquial language (orality), we are in the habit of saying that “we prefer this more than that”, which means a deviation from the formal standard of language. So, see the correct way:

I prefer chocolate the ice cream.

OBEY/DISOBEY

Both verbs are classified as indirect transitives, because whoever obeys, obey someone, and who disobeys, disobey someone. Note the following examples:

we must obey to our parents.

we must not disobey to our parents.

FORGET/REMEMBER

Regarding these two verbs, there are two observations that we must pay attention to: the first one concerns the fact that are not considered pronouns, that is, when they do not have the oblique pronoun with them, they do not require the presence of the preposition, or be:

I had already forgotten the gift.

I don't remember the day we were awarded.

In case these verbs are conceived as pronominals, that is, they bring the oblique pronoun together, then, necessarily, we have to make use of the preposition. Let's find out?

I already had ME forgotten OF gift.

I do not ME remember OF day we were awarded.

SYMPATHIZE

We must always be aware that this verb is classified as an indirect transitive, and must necessarily be accompanied by the use of the preposition. Find out:

We sympathize with the new teachers.

Important note: This verb should never be expressed as pronominal. In this way, constructions like this become incorrect:

We sympathize with the new teachers.
