The Brazilian territory on the map of South America

Brazil is the largest South American country and the fifth largest on the planet, with a territorial extension of 8,514,876 square kilometers, which corresponds to 48% of the total area of South America.
The large territorial extension gives the country a border with almost all the nations of this subcontinent, only Chile and Ecuador do not border Brazil. The national territory is also bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, with a coastline of 7,300 kilometers.
The Brazilian population contingent is also the largest.

Of the 393 million inhabitants of South America, more than 190.7 million live in Brazil, a quantity that makes the the fifth most populous country in the world, behind only China, India, the United States of America (USA) and Indonesia.
Several countries in South America are smaller and less populated than some Brazilian states. The state of Amazonas, for example, is only smaller than Argentina; and the population of the state of São Paulo (41.2 million inhabitants) is only smaller than that of Colombia (46.3 million).
