THE Rio+20, United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, will be held between days June 13th and 22nd of 2012 in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and will be attended by government leaders, as well as representatives of civil society. THE Rio+20 it is seen as a historic opportunity in shaping paths to a safer, more equal, cleaner, greener and more prosperous world for all.

The holding of this conference in Brazil has a special meaning, as it was during the dome of the earth or United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (Eco-92 or Rio-92) that the term Sustainable Development was consolidated. The name Rio+20, in addition to alluding to the 20th anniversary of the conference held in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, is justified because it sets the prospect for the next two decades.

Brazil sees the Rio+20 as a conference not just about the environment, but about sustainable development, and expects the following results from this event:

→ The eradication of poverty as an essential element for achieving sustainable development;

→ The inclusion of the concept of sustainable development in the decision-making process by the three pillars of sustainable development (economic, social and environmental), in order to overcome sectoral visions that still persist twenty years after sustainable development is defined as a priority. global;

→ The strengthening of multilateralism, with the clear message of adjustment of the structures of the United Nations and other international institutions to the challenge of sustainable development;

→ Recognition of the ongoing international reorganization, with its impact on global governance.

The Government believes that the balance between the three pillars of sustainable development can be strengthened during the conference through, for example, the organization of Targets of Sustainable Development, which would indicate with greater precision the areas in which national efforts and international cooperation should be concentrated, with a view to promoting development sustainable.
