While reading some texts, we can observe that there are two ways to write the verb to have in the present tense: HAS and HAS. So, when we go to write our own texts, we are left with a question: which of the two is correct?
First, it is necessary to understand that both forms exist in the Portuguese language and are correct, they are only conjugated in different people. This means that the verb TEM is conjugated in the 3rd person of the SINGULAR and TÊM is conjugated in the 3rd person of the PLURAL. It is a rule of agreement, in which the verb must be inflected according to the number inflection (singular or plural) of the nouns.
Like the verb TER, the verb VIR is also conjugated without an accent in the 3rd person singular and with a circumflex in the 3rd person plural. Look:
(I) have/come
(You) have/come
(He) has/comes
(we) have/came
(You) have/come
(They) have/come
It is necessary to point out that the New Orthographic Agreement of the Portuguese Language, in force since January 2009, did not change any of the conjugation and/or accentuation forms of the verb TER. Another relevant issue to be pointed out is that the words “teem” and “têem” do NOT exist.
Now, notice the application of the verbs HAS and HAS in some sentences:
HAS
Mariana has the brown eyes. (The verb HAVE/HAS agrees with the singular feminine noun – She).
Has people who don't know what they say.
open the closet and see if it still has flour.
HAS
Caio and Rodrigo has the same difficulties in public speaking. (Caio and Rodrigo/They – plural)
The neighbors has the habit of listening to music at a very high volume.
The students who has need for follow-up are on that list.
See how easy and important it is for us to study about these two conjugations of the verb TER? Keep following our tips and good studies!
