Importance of the nose. The importance of the nose for health

the nose is a structure cartilaginous which has two cavities and a septum between them. This structure, despite appearing to be just the way the air passes to travel towards the lungs, is of great importance for the body. Are we going to understand how this organ works?

In the nasal cavities, we find an epithelial tissue rich in glands that secrete mucus. This mucus, because of its sticky property, it is capable of retain fine particles, bacteria, dust and other substances present in the air. In addition, this secretion helps moisten the airways. Mucus is continuously produced by these cells and travels down our throat, where it is swallowed with saliva.

In addition to the mucus and air we breathe, in our nasal cavity we find eyelashes and the famous nose hairs. They act as filters, preventing foreign particles from gaining access to other parts of our respiratory system. Unlike mucus, hairs help filter out larger substances and organisms, such as insects. The cilia, which are smaller and thinner, make a waving movement and help the mucus filter out small particles and carry them towards the pharynx for swallowing.

In the nose, the air is heated so that it reaches the lung at a temperature similar to our body. This is possible because the tissue in the nasal cavity is richly vascularized, which allows for heating.

In addition to this function in the breathing, the nose ensures that the sound of our voice comes out properly, thus functioning as a sounding board. In addition, it also enables our perception of the different odors present in nature through the smell.

We can conclude, therefore, that the nose is not in our face just to make us more aesthetically charming. This structure is extremely important and without it our breathing becomes impaired. Therefore, always pay attention to your breathing, preventing it from starting with your mouth. Only the nose is capable of filter, moisten and heat the air in such a way that it is well used by the body.
