Power is a term that originated from the Latin possess, which means “to be able to”, and is a word that can be applied in several definitions and areas.
According to sociology, power is the ability to impose your will on others, and there are different types of power: social power, economic power, military power, political power, among others.
Some important authors who studied the question of power were Michel Foucault, Max Weber, Pierre Bourdieu.
The main sociological theories related to power are game theory, feminism, machismo, the symbolic field and so on.
For politics, power is the ability to impose something with no alternative to disobedience. Political power, when recognized as legitimate and sanctioned as the executor of the established order, coincides with authority, but there is political power distinct from it, as happens in the case of revolutions or dictatorships.
Power is expressed in different social relations, and where there are power relations, there is politics, and politics is expressed in different forms of power.
