Legislative power It is one of three powersof State which is attributed to legislative function, that is, the drafting of laws that regulate the State, the conduct of citizens and public and private organizations.
In Brazil, the Legislative Power is composed of the Chamber of Deputies (representing Brazilian citizens) and by federal Senate (representing the States and the Federal District), forming the National Congress, which is located in Brasilia.
It is the competence of the National Congress to verify the application of public resources in accordance with the law. For this, the Congress counts on the assistance of the court Union accounts (TCU), the body responsible for the control and inspection of the public administration, which may, for example, demand clarification from any person who manages public revenues, assets and values.
It is part of the functions of the Legislative Power to oversee the Executive Power, vote on budget laws and, in certain situations, judge people, including the President of the Republic or members of the Assembly.
The Executive Branch has the function of sanctioning or vetoing bills. It is represented by its leader, the President of the Republic.
In dictatorial regimes, Legislative Power is exercised by the dictator himself or by a legislative chamber appointed by him.
Municipal, State and Federal Legislative Power
The legislative power can act in three spheres: in the Federal Government, in the State or District Government and in the City Hall.
The Municipal Legislative Power is represented by the City Council and is exercised by councilors, who must have a close relationship with the elements of a community.
The State Legislative Power is represented by the Legislative Assembly or Chamber, being exercised by state deputies.
In the case of the Federal Legislative Power, which is represented by the National Congress, power is exercised by senators and federal deputies.
