Babylon was the name of Sumerian capital, in ancient Mesopotamia, which is now Iraq. Babylon means "Gate of God", the Jews, however, say it is a term of Hebrew origin, meaning "great confusion", and even appears in the Bible.
Babylon was an empire, which made history, mainly with the figure of King Nebuchadnezzar, and played a fundamental role in the history of Mesopotamia. Babylon was a very advanced city for its time, and since the beginning, its inhabitants had great knowledge about agriculture, architecture, astronomy, and so on.
The first king of Babylon was Hammurabi, which has had a great influence for all of humanity to this day, as it was he who created the division of the day into 24 hours and the hour into 60 minutes.
Babylon Gardens
Babylon is also marked in history because of the famous Hanging Gardens of Babylon, which are considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
Despite being included in this list, there is nothing to prove the existence of these Gardens, or if they ever really existed. There are not many detailed descriptions of the Gardens, much less archaeological remains have been found. It is said that King Nebuchadnezzar built the gardens for his wife Amytis, a princess of Media.
