Parlendas are child-themed word combinations that are part of the Brazilian folklore. Passed from generation to generation, parlendas are rhymes used as a game by children.

The parlendas are often rhymed and have rhythm and meter when recited. Rhymes are usually easy and help children with memory development.

One of the types of discussion are the lock languages, a verbal game in which a concentration of words with similar sounds and difficult syllables must be spoken quickly.

As they are orality traditions, there are countless variations for each speaker and their authorship is unknown. Some parlendas have been part of the Brazilian popular tradition for decades.

Of Latin origin, the word parlendas derives from “parlare”, which means to talk, talk.

Lock languages

Tongue twisters are a type of parlenda, used as a game or play by children. A tongue twister's sentences have complex or even-sounding syllables and when spoken quickly they are difficult to pronounce.

Generally, children's games consist of repeating the tongue twister several times without making mistakes, which can be a very difficult task and, therefore, requires great concentration.
