Meaning of Abstinence (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Abstinence is the act of deprive yourself of something, for some purpose, for example, abstinence from food for a religious reason, such as abstinence from meat.

Abstinence is a decision, often forced, that causes the individual not to do anything else, such as drinking, smoking or taking drugs. Abstinence is very much linked to toxic substances like alcoholism or drugs. There are other types of abstinence, such as abstinence from food, disciplinary abstinence, sexual abstinence, etc.

THE sexual abstinence it is the deprivation of sexual intercourse, often with the aim of preventing diseases such as AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. Sexual abstinence is closely linked to chastity, and is practiced by young people of some religions, for the sake of their devotion.

Along with abstinence, there is the abstinence crisis which are sudden changes, usually in behavior, such as hallucinations and seizures, in people who are very dependent on some substance. The term is widely used in relation to the use of illicit drugs, which generate physical and psychological dependence.

The physical and psychological changes caused by withdrawal are also known as withdrawal syndrome, which is characterized by symptoms such as malaise, anxiety, irritability, hypertension, insomnia, nausea, agitation, tachycardia, etc.
