Meaning of Zeugma (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Zeugma is a figure of speech in the Portuguese language, which consists of the omitting a word already mentioned in a sentence.

To avoid the successive repetition of repeated terms, the zeugma guarantees the omission of these words, without hamper the full understanding of the prayer, thanks to the context and graphic elements that are part of the phrase.

Example:"I like icecream; Maria, of chocolate" / "Your house is huge, mine is simpler".

Zeugma is classified as a construction figure, used in oral and written language to give greater expressiveness to the text.

In addition to avoiding the repetition of words, this figure of speech also enables the creation of a more dynamic speech
