Socialite is a person who makes part of a high social class, and who uses their influence in society to promote and participate in events.
This is usually the occupation of some individuals who normally belong to financially privileged families, members of the nobility or aristocracy. In addition to having great economic power, they also seek to maintain a constant presence at media parties, appearing in social columns, for example.
The word socialite comes from the English language, but due to its common use among Portuguese speakers, especially in Brazil, this term was included in the dictionary.
Those who are socialites tend to belong to a limited and prominent social group, with great popularity and enjoying privileges among other members of society.
The concept of socialite would have emerged between the 18th and 19th centuries, in reference to the wives and lovers of royals. However, contrary to its current meaning, at that time being a socialite was not a very pleasurable activity, but rather a way of survival at Court.
For example, the wives of nobles had an obligation to always maintain sympathy when hosting people they didn't like. Meanwhile, lovers were supposed to use their social skills to keep their boyfriends' interest and to gain favors within the Court.
Currently, socialites use social media on the internet as a means of promoting their image. Likewise, they take advantage of these tools to act as behavior influencers, dictating fashion and setting trends among others.
