The official flag of Croatia consists of three horizontal stripes in blue, white and red, like Croatian coat of arms in the middle.
It is one of the greatest symbols of the European country, and was officially adopted on December 21, 1990, after the territory was no longer part of the former Yugoslavia.
Before independence, the flag of the so-called Socialist Republic of Croatia had the same stripes, but instead of the coat of arms it carried a red five-pointed star with yellow edges.
Meaning of Elements on the Flag of Croatia
The colors of the stripes on the flag are the Pan-Slavic colors, movement for the union of the Slav peoples of the beginning of the 20th century.
Their meaning in the composition of the Croatian flag is not official, but there is a symbology that the blue would be devotion to God, white would be peace and red would be the blood of the martyrs who died for homeland.
Other currents indicate that the colors represent three regions of Croatian territory.
The shield in the center is formed by a pattern in white and red checkered, which would represent the formation of the Croatian people.
This checkered pattern is the inspiration for the Croatia Soccer Team uniform.
In the crown on top of the shield are the five coats of arms: the Croatian coat of arms, the Dubrovinik coat of arms, the Dalmatian coat of arms, the Istrian coat of arms and the Slavonian coat of arms.
The flag ratio is 1:2.
