Meaning of tropical climate (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Tropical climate is a climatic zone located between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, characterized by being predominantly hot and rainy.

The average annual temperature in tropical climate regions is above 20 degrees Celsius.

There are no climatic seasons as occurs in temperate regions of the planet, varying only between periods of more intense rainfall and droughts. But, as a rule, the volume of rain is uniform in almost every month of the year.

Much of the Brazilian territory belongs to the tropical climate, as well as some regions of the African continent, South Asia and North Oceania.

Tropical Climate Characteristics

  • Megathermal (average annual temperature above 20 degrees Celsius);
  • There are no definite seasons of the year;
  • Constant rains;
  • Low thermal range;
  • Existence of two specific seasons: dry and rainy.

According to the climate classification of Köppen-Geiger, the tropical climate includes other subclimates, such as: equatorial climate, dry tropical climate, humid tropical climate and the tropical monsoon climate.

equatorial climate

Located in regions near the equator. It has a low temperature range and high temperatures throughout the year, as well as an abundant rainfall (constant rainfall).

In Brazil, this climate is present in the North region, mainly in the Amazon forest zone.

dry tropical climate

Marked by a period of annual drought, when the monthly average rainfall reaches a value below 60 mm.

Typically, the dry season occurs during the winter period. In Brazil, in regions with a dry tropical climate, rainfall is usually more scarce between the months of May and September.

Wet tropical climate

Present in tropical regions that are close to the literal. It is characterized by constant high temperatures, as well as high moisture content in the air. The rains are constant.
