Meaning of Nostalgia (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Nostalgia means the state of deep sadness caused by lack of something. And the sense of longing originated by the memory of a moment lived in the past or of people who are far away.

It is a melancholy feeling usually produced in people who are far from their homeland and miss their homeland, their home and things that are familiar to them.

Etymologically, the word nostalgia is formed by the Greek terms nostos (which means homecoming) and algos (which means pain). This feeling of sadness is caused in an individual by distance from a place, people or things. This distance from dear elements causes despondency and an extreme desire to return to those moments and places or to be with some people.

Nostalgia can lead to abnormal behavior in individuals who have been estranged from their homeland or separated from their family. There is a strong desire to return to the homeland or to see their relatives again. It is a feeling similar to longing but it always tends to increase.

Nostalgic thoughts can also be associated with moments of happiness experienced in a certain period of life, in some cases they are idealized.

The state of nostalgia is also produced through childhood memory. From toys, games, games, television programs and other moments experienced as a child.

Romanticism was a cultural movement marked by nostalgia, which was manifested by the romantics in literature, architecture and plastic arts. A state of undefined sadness, like melancholy.
