Game over is English expression that literally means “game over”.
Usually, the expression game over is often used to represent the end of a video game or another type of electronic game, especially when the player cannot complete the challenge proposed during the game and loses.
Even though this expression is strictly related to video games, it can also be used in other games that are not electronic, such as football, basketball, volleyball, etc., also with the meaning of “end of match".
Originally, this expression began to be used from the 1950s on machines of pinball electromechanical. When the player dropped the ball into the hole, the expression "game over" appeared to indicate the failure of the match.
Game over it can still be slang, which is quite popular among native English speakers, and is used to represent someone's lack of success in a given situation. In this case, the expression game over it is also often used among Brazilians, but with a sense of reinforcing an idea previously presented.
Example:“Maria, I think it's time you gave up fighting for your love. Game over” / “I think this will be a game over for my relationship”.
Still as slang, the friends of the newlyweds who are about to get married often use the game over to represent the end of single life, that is, the “end of the game”, as married life would represent a serious and responsible commitment, a scenario that could not be compared to a game.
