Meaning of Intelligible (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Intelligible is an adjective in the Portuguese language, relative to easily understood, something whose content is easy to understand or that can be heard clearly.

Example: "The class speaker gave a very intelligible speech”.

In English, the term “intelligible” can be translated to intelligible.

In the field of philosophy, the concept of “Intelligible World” or “World of Ideas” was described and systematized by Plato, a definition based on the Theory of Ideas.

The so-called “Intelligible World” is based on the ideal that the individual can make of something, that is, the idea that people have of things in reality.

This ideal is the opposite of the so-called “Sensitive World”, which consists of what is material, that is, the image of ideas. For example, people know what a table is, regardless of its shape or appearance, because everyone knows what the idea of a table is like. The image of this object, however, is part of the sensible world.

For Plato, the sensible is a “shadow” of the intelligible, since all things in nature only exist because the ideas of these things exist.

For example, there are ugly and beautiful things in nature because there is an idea of what is ugly and what is beautiful.

The classic tale of “Plato's Cave” is the main metaphorical example of the Theory of Ideas.
