Gaulswere Celtic peoples who inhabited the region of Gaul, which today corresponds to the territory of France. The origin of Paris is the ancient “Lutetia” (Celtic name, Latinized – meaning “dwelling amidst the waters”) from the time of the Gauls.
The Gauls were called of barbarians by the ancient Greeks and Romans, as they were peoples who spoke a strange language and had a civilization considered less evolved than theirs.
The Celts lived in central Europe and comprised several distinct groups, the most important is that of the Gauls, who in the Bronze and Iron Ages stood out as excellent metallurgists.
The Gauls began a great expansion between the VII and V centuries; Ç. and reached their maximum limit in the III century; Ç. Remaining languages of this group are still spoken today in the Ireland, Isle of Man and Scotland (Gaelic), in the Shetland, Orcadas and Faroer Islands, Wales (Welsh) and in Brittany.
The Gauls were divided into tribes or peoples, who lived at war with each other. Such struggles never allowed the people to have political stability, let alone form a unitary state. Cultural unity existed, ensured by the priests called
druids, who took care of the maintenance of the norms. The frequent disputes of the Gauls facilitated the Roman conquest. Joining now and then to another tribe, Julius Caesar managed to subdue the whole of Gaul, in the 1st century BC. C., who soon assimilated the Roman civilization – its language (slightly modified) and its laws. With the rise of Christianity, they who were polytheists joined the new faith.
Julius Caesar was the first to write about the life of the Gauls. In his book “De Bello Gallico” (On the War in Gaul) he tells many aspects of the customs of the barbarian peoples, becoming a precious source of information about the Celts.
