Sortilege is a noun in Portuguese that refers to the act or action of bewitch, enchant or seduce, through natural or artificial attributes.
Etymologically, the term "sortilege" originated from the Latin sortilegium, which means "guessing". In the traditional definition of the word, spell it is related to practices considered occult, such as the witchcraft, a witchcraft or the invocation of evil spirits in order to achieve some personal goal.
During the Middle Ages, for example, several people, mainly women, were sentenced to Bonfire of the Inquisition by the Catholic Church who, according to the accusations, used spells (spells and incantations, theoretically supernatural) in favor of the devil's will.
