Propedeutics is a term used to deal with initial and introductory steps in the learning process.
Its origin comes from the Greek term propaideutikós, which means “related to instruction, instructive”, where it is possible to perceive the reference of the teaching idea.
In general, propaedeutics refers to prior learning of a subject or discipline. It can be taught in the form of a course or part of an introductory course of subjects that meet the basic need for a minimum knowledge of a particular subject.
It is usually directly related to disciplines related to science, arts, education and others.
In the health area, specifically in medicine and in clinical areas, propaedeutics characterizes a set of techniques to gather data and initial diagnoses. The techniques used involve observation, palpation, temperature measurement and other simple and non-specific tests.
In the area of nursing, propaedeutics aims to make the team perform the patient's clinical history in the most correct way, using techniques such as the prescription of care, the evolution and the notes of nursing. This process is systematic as it involves using an organized approach to accomplish the goal.
In religion, propaedeutics has been used by the Roman Catholic Church since the Council of Trent in introductory seminars, with the aim of introducing candidates for the priesthood to the principles of Philosophy and Theology.
