How to write a letter


In an increasingly digital world, with email, social networks and real-time messaging apps, the habit of writing letters, once so common, has ended up losing its place.

However, writing and exchanging letters with loved ones has several benefits. They help to establish an emotional bond with each other, making the relationship even closer.

This type of text also rescues the pleasure of write rather than just typing. In addition, the instantaneous information gives rise to the expectation of waiting for the letter, which can be kept for many years, which makes everything more special.

The letter is also a textual genre very charged in Portuguese language classes and Essay, exams, entrance exams, Enem and public exams. So, it is essential to know how to write a letter correctly.

Types of Letters

A letter is characterized by the existence of a sender and a receiver, that is, a sender and a recipient. there are four letter types. Are they:

  • personal letter – The text is written with the subject of interest of the sender, their intentions and opinions. Contains place and date of writing and greetings to the recipient.
  • argumentative letter – It has a structure similar to that of the personal letter. However, it is aimed at a specific recipient (an institution or government, for example), with the aim of persuading the reader.
  • reader's letter – Intended for newspapers and magazines to criticize, praise and make suggestions regarding some of the published content. In this case, there is no specific structure.
  • Open letter – Its main characteristic is related to the collectivity, that is, this type of letter can be sent and/or directed to groups of people, addressing issues of public interest.

1 — In the upper left corner of the page, write the location and date the letter is being written.

  • Examples: São Paulo, July 31, 2020.

2 — Start the letter by directing it to the recipient.

  • Examples: Dear grandma / Hon. Mr. President of the Republic / Dear colleague / Dear Mr. João.

3 — Write the content of the letter, noting the agreement, punctuation and structure of the text, which must have a beginning, middle and end.

4 — End the letter with a thank you and farewell.

  • Examples: Sincerely / Grateful for your attention / See you later / Waiting for an answer.

5 — Sign the letter. But remember: in public examinations, for admission to universities or other selection processes, you must not identify yourself.
