In the world, there is a huge biodiversity, having thousands of species of animals of all kinds. Thus, each region has its own fauna, able to live in the niches present there. At Europe, with an area of more than 10 million km², divided into 50 countries, there are habitats of well-known animals, such as bears and wolves.
However, with the advancement of humanity out of balance with nature, many animals have already been extinct and others are in endangered. According to the European Parliament, of the eight million animals in the world, one million are already at risk of extinction.

Iberian wolf
The Iberian wolf population present in Portugal is not known for sure, however, studies compiled between 2003 and 2014 accounted for the existence of about 47 packs. Its population decline is caused by a history of direct persecution, as well as the decline of its natural prey.
In 1988, the Iberian wolf was protected by law in Portugal and today the species is stable, despite having a limited population.
Iberian Lynx
The Iberian lynx is characterized as an animal in danger of extinction since 2015, after years in the IUCN's most vulnerable category, the Critically Endangered. Studies show that the animal has been an inhabitant of the Iberian Peninsula for approximately 27 thousand years, with about 440 individuals currently accounted for.
The disappearance of the Iberian lynx is mainly due to the decline of wild rabbit populations, the basis of their diet, aggravated by the loss of habitat and its continuous defragmentation (the result of human construction) and by direct persecution.
Saramugo
The saramugo is a small fish in critical situation of extinction. Inhabitant of one of the most important regions for the biodiversity of freshwater fish in Europe, the Iberian Peninsula, it has been disappearing from the Guadiana River Basin, in Alentejo, in the last 40 years.

In addition to the predation of invasive exotic fish, pollution, the construction of large dams and the exploitation of water resources are also important factors in the extinction of this fish.

The european hamster is a species wild present in Europe that has suffered a drastic reduction in population, previously found in grassy fields. For example, in France, there was a 94% decrease in the population in the hamster.
Climate change, agriculture and light pollution are the most influential factors in the extinction of this animal, which is predicted to disappear in the next 30 years.

THE bird is one considered critically endangered on the European continent. Medium sized, it feeds on small fish and are endangered mainly due to the restricted breeding area.
This bird breeds on the coast or on small islands and ends up dying on fishing boat baits when they are in search of food. The reproduction areas are threatened by mammals introduced in the places.
Microtus bavaricus
The Bavarian pine rat is a rodent that inhabits the Austrian, Italian and Bavarian Alps of Europe.
No individual of this species has been identified since 1980, which led scientists to characterize the animal as extinct. However, in 2000, on the border between the Austria and the Germany, a rat was found in a trap. There are currently 23 examples of the species in museums.
