Siddhartha Gautama, known as Buddha, the “Enlightened One”, was a religious leader who lived in India. His kindness and wisdom made him considered the "Supreme Buddha", founder of Buddhism.
Buddha lost his mother seven days after his birth. According to tradition, the night before the birth, his mother would have dreamed of a white elephant that penetrated her belly. With this, the brahmins interpreted that the child would be of the highest rank.
His mother gave birth outdoors on the Lumbini prairies. During Buddha's baptism, the brahmins confirmed the prophecy and added that the boy would still reign over the world.
Buddha's Teachings
Buddha criticized many aspects of traditional Hinduism, but he also endorsed many of its secular concepts. Among these, he accepted the idea that all living beings fulfill infinite cycles, being birth, death and reincarnation.
The religious leader also adopted the theory of karma. This is a law that behavior during incarnation can reflect on future lives. So, if the person has been good in one life, the next he will be rewarded.
Furthermore, Buddha also remained faithful to the renunciation of earthly things. That would be a way to reach wisdom and perfection.
Buddha still preached throughout the regions of India the Four Noble Truths:
- Everyone is subject to suffering.
- Suffering is caused by human desire, that is, it has a cause.
- Suffering can be brought to an end.
- Man can be freed from suffering.
