Scientists from more than 50 countries participated in the construction of the world's largest particle accelerator, a gigantic machine that took about fourteen years to build and an expense of approximately $8 billion. This seems to be the most ambitious experiment of all time, an experience whose main focus is the recreation of the Big Bang, the explosion that would have given rise to the Universe. Located between France and Switzerland, this machine is built at a depth of 100 meters and has a length of just over 27 kilometers. This apparatus has four main points at which gigantic detectors were built in order to to be able to detect and visualize particles so small, it takes millions of them to form a grain of sand.
This ambitious experiment has the participation of scientists from several countries, among them the Brazilian Carley Martins. No country is willing to spend alone such an exorbitant amount as that which was spent on building this incredible and gigantic equipment, it makes us see that the spirit of cooperation and collaboration is of great importance for the project to really be concluded.
On September 10, 2008, the tunnels of the largest particle accelerator in the world, called LHC (acronym for Large Hadron Collider), were loaded with the first beams of protons, which is one of the particles that form the atom. Roughly speaking, the LHC acts as a “roundabout” for protons, where they can be accelerated to 99.99% the speed of light. These tunnels have huge and very powerful superconducting magnets that have the ability to accelerate and detour these particles, causing them to rotate in opposite directions and collide. With the proton shock, scientists hope to recreate the big bang, the explosion that gave birth to the universe. After the shock, the shattered protons are expected to release millions of smaller particles that scientists theorize might exist. These particles originated from the shock of protons were called by the scientists of God or Boson Higgs particles. According to scientists' theories, they would be responsible for the creation of the entire universe.
Despite the great expense in this newest and gigantic experiment, there are groups that seek in justice to have the experiment stopped. They claim that this experiment can bring about the end of the world, as the collision of protons can form a black hole with such a concentration of energy that it can suck everything in its path. around.
Do not stop now... There's more after the advertising ;)
