Cairo-born Egyptian sultan who became the first king (1922-1936) of modern Egypt, promoted a new constitution and re-established Constitutional Rights and Parliament. Son of the Khedive Ismail Pasha the Magnificent, he was educated in Europe and returned to Egypt (1880). Particularly concerned with the army and cultural affairs, he founded Cairo University (1906) and succeeded his brother Hussein as sultan. Drafted the national constitution (1923), internal political difficulties led him to abrogate the constitution and replace it with a new one (1928) that created a parliament with powers only advisors. A great popular agitation (1935) made him go back to re-establish the old constitution. He married twice, to Princess Chivekiar Ibrahim (1876), with whom he had two children, and to Nazli Sabri (1894), with whom he had five including Farouk I, his successor after his death, in the city of Cairo.
