History of Art. Aspects of the History of Art

THE HistorygivesArt it is very vast and complex, as it accompanies all human development. Therefore, it is divided into several periods, in which the varied forms of artistic production of countless civilizations throughout human history are verified. Some historians understand that the History of Art, from Pre-History to our days, translates the history of humanity, that is, it reveals the process of human self-understanding.

One of the initial themes in art history, for example, is “the art in Prehistory”, period in which information can be collected about the symbolic systems developed by primitive men, their techniques (such as rock art) and the main places in the world where this type of art can be found today.

We must also talk about the art developed by the great civilizations of Antiquity in the West and the Middle East, such as the art of mesopotamia, a ancient egypt art, a persian art, a greek art, a Roman art, a Byzantine art and the Early Christian Art, the latter is divided between the phase of official artistic production and production in the catacombs Romans.

Do not stop now... There's more after the advertising ;)

Following chronologically, we have art in the Middle Ages period, with themes such as Gothic art, which can be explored in the study of gothic stained glass and in the specificity of the german goth, in addition to the medieval cathedrals and the painting techniques that laid the foundation for the Renaissance artists.

Among the Renaissance artists, the Italians stand out, such as Michelangelo. In addition, we also have the post-Renaissance phase, highlighting the baroque art (especially the baroque painting — in which the techniques of light and shadow were masterfully employed —) and the variation of the same period, known as Rococo.

Other themes are also included in the field of Art History, such as those from the 18th and 19th centuries, that is, Romanticism, Symbolism and Impressionism; as well as topics related to modern Art, that is, the avant-garde art of the 20th century, being the surrealism one of the pressing examples.
