ball boy is the person who searches for the balls thrown off the field in a football match. This function came about after the construction of the Maracanã stadium, where several balls left the field and someone was needed to pick them up.
Origin
The term “gandula” appeared in 1939. At that time, Vasco da Gama hired an Argentine striker called Bernardo Gandulla, but this player did not adapt to the team and was only on the bench. To try to show his club usefulness, he always ran and caught the balls that left the field, even those of the opponent, like this, this player became sympathetic to the fans and, when he left, the term “balloon” continued to be used to designate the replacements of balls.
