The movements of tectonic plates

According to plate tectonics theory, lithospheric plates slide and sometimes collide with each other at a speed ranging between 1 and 10 cm/year. The movements performed by them are distinct and varied, as follows:

→ Convergence movement

It occurs when two plates collide and the edge of one is under the other until it reaches the mantle.

→ Removal movement

It consists of the distance between two plates, forming a gap that is filled with rock fragments from the mantle in a liquid state.

→ Collision and uplift movement

Corresponds to the collision between two lithospheric plates, the layers of elastic rocks give rise to chains of mountains, often volcanic, with this characteristic of formation we have the Andes and the Himalayas.

→ Sliding movement

It is responsible, in certain cases, for seismic shocks, due to the fact that one plate moves over the other.

Tsunami representation - an effect caused by the tsunami
Seaquake

Learn more about the tidal wave, which is nothing more than earthquakes occurring on the ocean floor and caused by the movements of tectonic plates. The content of the following text will address not only the definition of a tidal wave, but also the consequences of this phenomenon, how it originates and the difference between a tsunami and a tsunami.
