i.e. is the abbreviation for id you, a Latin expression that means "that is", in Portuguese.
This abbreviation is very common in English, and there are others that are also well known, such as e.g."exempli gratia", which means "for example", etc. (et cetera), which is best known.
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these terms were written in full, nowadays the abbreviated form is more common, and the use of e.g. is widely used in the English language.
In Portuguese, this abbreviation is often used in legal or scientific texts, mainly to indicate the explanation, specification or description of a certain statement that was made before.
Example: "The teaching-learning process, when focused on adult education, needs to take into account a meaningful learning, which involves the action of the subject, i.e., active learning or self-learning".
i.e. and e.g.
Unlike the i.e., which is used to give explanations or contextualizations about something that was said, the e.g. serves to give examples about a particular subject or word present in the text.
Example: "Don't forget to buy meat (e.g. fish, beef, pork, chicken).
As they are an abbreviation of Latin expressions, both must be written in italics.
