Federal Territory of Ponta Porã. Ponta Porã

O Federal Territory of Ponta Porã it was created by the Estado Novo, commanded by the dictator Getúlio Vargas, as a result of the National Security measures taken during the Second World War. It was located in what is now the current state of Mato Grosso do Sul.

Created by Decree-Law No. 5.812 of September 13, 1943, the Federal Territory of Ponta Porã was extinguished in September 1946, when a new Constitution came into force in Brazil, which replaced the authoritarian one New state.

The creation of federal territories took place in some states that were dismembered in the border regions of Brazil. The objective was to carry out an administration made directly by the federal government. In addition to the Federal Territory of Ponta Porã, the Federal territories of Amapá, Rio Branco, Guaporé and Iguassu were created. All by the same ordinance.

Do not stop now... There's more after the advertising ;)

Of these, only Amapá, Rio Branco and Guaporé remained as states of the Brazilian Federation. The first one kept the same name, but that of Rio Branco became Roraima, and that of Guaporé became Rondônia.

The territory of Ponta Porã had the city of Ponta Porã as its capital, being administered by the military officer Ramiro Noronha throughout its existence. The municipalities of Porto Murtinho, Bela Vista, Dourados, Miranda, Nioaque and Maracaju were also part of the Federal Territory.

With the end of World War II, the Federal Territory of Ponta Porã was reincorporated to the state of Mato Grosso.
