Seychelles. Seychelles data

Seychelles is the smallest country on the African continent. Its territory, which has no land borders, is formed by a set of 155 islands in the Indian Ocean. The majority of Seychelles (90%) live on Mahé Island, where the national capital, Vitória, is located.

The first Europeans to occupy this region were the Portuguese, in 1502. However, from 1756 onwards, the French began to exercise dominance in the archipelago. However, in 1814, through an agreement between France and Great Britain (Treaty of Paris), the British began the process of colonization in Seychelles. National independence was only won in 1976. Since then, the nation has joined the British Commonwealth – a group formed by the United Kingdom and its former colonies.

With approximately 84,600 inhabitants, Seychelles provides the second best standard of living on the African continent. The infant mortality rate is 12 per thousand live births; and only 8% of inhabitants over 15 years of age are illiterate.

Agriculture in Seychelles is based on the production of cinnamon, tea and bananas; another activity of great importance is fishing, as the nation is a large fish exporter. However, tourism is the main economic activity, accounting for 70% of the country's financial income. The natural beauties of the islands (fine white sand, bluish water and pleasant temperature) attract thousands of visitors.
