O Brazilian Concretism it is considered the last great avant-garde movement in Brazilian literature. Inspired by the innovative strength of Modernism, which in 1922 gained impact and introduced important names such as Manuel Bandeira, Oswald and Mário de Andrade, concrete poetry continued literary experimentalisms and transgressed the discursive form of verses. A period of intense creativity and the junction between word and image began, elements that would forever transform the way of making poetry in Brazil.
The consequences of concrete art in poetry became evident in São Paulo on the occasion of the launch of the magazine Noigandres (a word taken from a song by the troubadour provençal Arnaut Daniel, which means "the odor that keeps away boredom") in 1952, founded by a "concretist triad", the writers Décio Pignatari and the brothers Haroldo and Augusto of Campos. Among them, Augusto de Campos is perhaps the ultimate expression of Concretism: his poetry uses resources from the arts visual, advertising, music and digital technologies, with the poet being a great media researcher electronics. The verbivocovisual dimension (concept created by the Irish poet James Joyce and dealing with an area of linguistics that participates in the advantages of non-verbal communication without abdicating the virtualities of the word) permeates all of his work, which also values the interaction of poetry with the song.
Poet, translator and essayist, Augusto de Campos was born in São Paulo on February 14, 1931. Younger brother of the poet Haroldo de Campos (1929 – 2003), he debuted with the book of poems the king minus the kingdom, in 1951. In 1955, he published in the magazine Noigandres a series of poems in color called poets, which is considered the inaugural milestone of the concrete poetry in Brazil (the expression “concrete poetry” appears for the first time as the title of an article by him in that same year). Later released the books Popcretos (1964) and Poemobiles (1974), among others, in which he highlighted his particular visual and aesthetic focus.
Augusto de Campos he is the only living representative of Concretism and the first Brazilian poet to win the Neruda Poetry Prize, created by the Chilean Culture Council. Recently, the writer released the book Other, first collection of unpublished poems since the book No, 2003.
