Verbal Agreement: simple and compound subject

THE verbal agreement it refers to the relationship of dependence established between one term and another through a prayer context. The main agents of this process are represented by the subject, which works like subordinate; it's the verb, which plays the role of subordinate.

Thus, we have that verbal agreement is characterized by the adaptation of the verb to the requirements "number and person” in relation to the subject. For example, we have:

The student arrived late.

In this case, the verb is presented in the third person singular, as it refers to a subject, also expressed as such (he).

How could we also say: the students arrived late.

This, then, is the basic principle of verbal agreement. Now look at the cases of simple guy and compound subject:

Cases referring to a simple subject:

1) In the case of a simple subject, the verb agrees with the nucleus in number and person:

O studenthas arrived late.

2) In cases referring to a subject represented by collective noun, the verb remains in the third person singular:

THE crowd, terrified, exited screaming.

Observation:

- In case the collective appears followed by adjunct adnominal in the plural, the verb will remain in the singular or it may go to the plural:

One crowdof peopleexited screaming.
One crowdof peopleleft screaming.

3) When the subject is represented by partitive expressions, represented by "the majority of, the greater part of, the half of, a portion of, among others", the verb can either agree with the nucleus of these expressions or with the noun that follows it:

THE majority from the students solved to stay.
The majority of studentsresolved to stay.

4) In case the subject is represented by approximate expressions, represented by "about, close to", the verb agrees with the noun determined by them:

about twenty candidates if signed up in the joke contest.

5) In cases where the subject is represented by the expression "more than one", the verb remains in the singular:

More than one candidate if signed up in the joke contest.

Observation: noif the expression is repeated or associated with a verb that expresses reciprocity, the verb must remain in the plural:

More than one student, more than one teacher contributed to the food donation campaign.

More than one traineeembraced during graduation ceremonies.

6) When the subject is composed of the expression "one of what", the verb will remain in the plural:

This player was one of theacted in the Copa America.

7) In cases relating to agreement with pronominal phrases, represented by “some of us, which of you, which of you, some of us”, among others, it is necessary to stick to two basic questions:

  •  In case the first pronoun is expressed in the plural, the verb may agree with it, as it may also agree with the personal pronoun:

some of we O we will receive. / Some of us the will receive.

  • When the first pronoun of the phrase is expressed in the singular, the verb will also remain in the singular:

Some of us will receive it.

8) In case the subject appears represented by the pronoun "who", the verb will remain in the third person singular or it may agree with the antecedent of this pronoun:

it was us whosaid all the truth to her. / It was us whowe count all the truth to her.

9) In cases where the subject appears highlighted by the word "that", the verb must agree with the term that precedes this word:

Do not stop now... There's more after the advertising ;)

In this company we are we whowe take the decisions. / I am at home I thatI decide everything.

10) In case the subject appears represented by expressions that indicate percentages, the verb will agree with the numeral or noun to which this percentage refers:

50% of the employees approved the decision of the board. / 50% of the electoratesupported the decision.

Comments:

- If the verb appears before the percentage expression, it must agree with the numeral:

Approved the decision of the board 50% of employees.

- In cases related to 1%, the verb will remain in the singular:

1% of the employees not approved the decision of the board.

- In cases where the numeral is accompanied by determinants in the plural, the verb will remain in the plural:

the 50% of the employees supported the decision of the board.

11) In cases where the subject is represented by pronouns treatment, the verb must be used in the third person singular or plural:

Your Majestiesliked of the tributes.

Your Majestythanked the invitation.

12) Cases related to subject represented by proper noun in the plural they are related to some aspects that determine them:

  • Faced with plural names of works, followed by the verb to be, this remains in the singular, as long as the predicative is also in the singular:

The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubasé a creation of Machado de Assis.

  • In the case of an article expressed in the plural, the verb also remains in the plural:

YouU.Sthey are a world power.

  • Cases in which the article appears in the singular or in which it does not appear, the verb remains in the singular:

United States is a world power.

Cases referring to compound subject:

1) In cases relating to a subject composed of different grammatical people, the verb should go to the plural, being related to two basic assumptions:

- When there is the 1st person, this will prevail over the others:

Me, you and him will have a beautiful ride.

- When there is a 2nd person, the verb can inflect in the 2nd or 3rd person:

You and he are cousins.
You and he are cousins.

2) In cases where the compound subject appears prefixed to the verb, this will remain in the plural:

the father and his two childrenattended to the event.

3) In case the subject appears postponed to the verb, this may agree with the nearest nucleus or remain in the plural:

attended to the event the father and his two children.

Showed up to the event the father and her two children.

4) In cases related to simple guy, but with more than one core, the verb must remain in the singular:

My husband and great fellowdeserve all the happiness in the world.

5) Cases related to a subject composed of synonymous words or ordered by elements in gradation, the verb can remain in the singular or go to the plural:

My victory, my achievement, my award are the result of my effort. / My victory, my achievement, my award is the result of my effort.

Here you have established familiarity with the cases referring to both particularities. So, in order to continue your studies, you can check other cases through the text "Verbal agreement".
