Meaning of Hipster (What It Is, Concept and Definition)

Hipster is an English word used to describe a group of people with their own style and who habitually invents fashion, setting new alternative trends.

The term derives from "hip”, an English adjective used since the 1940s with the meaning of “cool” or “innovative”, designating rich white youth who imitated black jazz style.

Hipster AccessoriesIn early 2000, the word emerged to classify a group of people who in most sometimes is between 15 and 25 years old, usually middle class, that combines stylish pieces of clothing modern and vintage, composing an original look.

To create the extravagant style, the hipsters rescued some old accessories such as fedora hats and model sunglasses wayfarer. The pants skinny, dots and some plaid patterns are featured on her clothes.

Usually hipsters have a very distinct musical taste, not liking very commercial bands and music. They usually enjoy listening to Tom Waitts, Bob Dylan and alternative rock bands. They prefer old movies and love going to thrift stores, fairs, art galleries and museums.

They like to go against social conventions, dislike the dominant commercial culture and seek to rescue local popular cultures. They are against what is described in English as mainstream, a word that describes the most popular customs, trends and fashions followed by the majority.

If for some, hipsters dress in an unusual and authentic way, for others they are classified as tacky, with affected looks and creators of disastrous combinations.
