The population of Austria it is formed by 8,387,491 inhabitants. Austrian territory was occupied in antiquity by Celtic peoples. Later, the Romans conquered the region. With the disintegration of the Roman Empire in the 5th century, the area was invaded by Bavarians, Goths, Huns and Lombards. Currently, most of the population is of Austrian origin, but there are also Yugoslavs, Turks, Germans, among others.
The demographic density, obtained by dividing the total population by the territorial extension, is approximately 100 inhabitants per square kilometer, therefore, the country is highly populated. The average annual population growth rate in Austria, as in most European countries, is low, averaging 0.37%.
Approximately 67.5% of the inhabitants live in urban areas; and 32.5% live in rural areas. Vienna, the national capital, is the most populous city, with around 1.6 million inhabitants. Other Austrian cities with high population concentration are: Graz (253,994), Linz (189,122), Salzburg (147,732) and Innsbruck (118,035).
According to data released in 2010 by United Nations (UN), Austria, with an average of 0.851, has a high Human Development Index (HDI), occupying 25th place in the world ranking, which is formed by 169 nations. Thus, the population of Austria enjoys an excellent social standard.
