Roncador Ecological Reserve

THE Roncador Ecological Reserve (RECOR) - also called IBGE Ecological Reserve – is located in the Federal District, 35 km south of Brasília. It is one of the most important ecological reserves in Brazil and is maintained by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

This reserve was officially created on December 22, 1975, to become one of the conservation units of the Cerrado biome. Its area is also part of the Gama Cabeça-de-Veado Environmental Protection Area, recently created by UNESCO.

The reserve area was donated to IBGE by the Federal District government in 1965. With the expansion of the agricultural frontier in Brazil and the consequent devastation of the cerrado in 1975, it was decided to create a reserve for the preservation and carrying out of studies of scientific interest.

Academic work intensified in the 1990s and made important discoveries about the cerrado in relation to the characteristics of vegetation, insects and animals, some of which are currently in extinction, such as the Giant Anteater, the Maned Wolf and the Camper Deer.

Even today, the IBGE Ecological Reserve is widely used by researchers who, in addition to the topics mentioned above, also study the climate, soils, relief, hydrography, among other factors.
