Washington State is located in the northwestern region of the United States, bordering the Pacific Ocean to the west, the states of Idaho to the west, Oregon to the south, and Canada to the north. The state bears the same name as the national capital of the United States. Therefore, to avoid confusion, the acronym D.C. (District of Columbia) is adopted after the name of the US capital.
Its name is a tribute to the leader of the American forces of the American Revolution of 1776 and the country's first president, George Washington. The first explorers in the region were the Spaniards. It was later occupied by the British, however, these explorers did not found any permanent settlements. Between the 1810s and 1840s, the region was a source of dispute between the British and the Americans, until in 1846, the two countries reached an agreement. In 1848, the American province of Orgeon was created, a territory that included what is now Washington, which only became a state on November 11, 1889.
Regarding its geographic characteristics, Washington is marked by contrasts: a certain region of the state is considered one of the wettest in the world; another large part of it is quite arid. Due to the proximity to large amounts of water, temperatures in the state are quite mild: averages of 14.5ºC in summer and -1ºC in winter.
Washington's economy is based primarily on the tertiary sector, with an emphasis on providing community and personal services. In industry, the State stands out in the production of planes, ships, software and electronic products. Large companies in these fields, such as Boeing, Microsoft and Nintendo, are headquartered in Washington. The state capital is Olympia; the largest city, economic and financial center of it is Seattle.
