Definition of DIY (What it is, Concept and Definition)

DIY is a term originating in French "bricolage" whose meaning refers to the execution of little housework, without having to resort to the services of a professional.

Gardening work, object recycling, furniture painting, crafts, and various other home-made remodeling or decorating services are considered DIY. These are manual activities of simple or more laborious execution, where the consumer is responsible for the work performed.

The DIY process is related to the concept of DIY (Do It Yourself) which means "Do it yourself", a concept created in the United States in the 1950s. In many cases, the DIY method works like hobby providing moments of pleasure and satisfaction in those who perform it.

In Brazil there are large stores with various DIY products, such as the French multinational Leroy Merlin.

Bricolage and Intertextuality

DIY can also be a type of text creation. In this specific case, a text created through DIY is composed of different excerpts from other texts, which are then "pasted" through a process similar to that of DIY.
