Meaning of Playwright (What it is, Concept and Definition)

Playwright is an expression that originates from the Greek "dramatourgos", which means playwright. The dramatic texts written by the playwright are intended for representation by actors, whether in theater or in television drama (novelas, films, miniseries, etc.). The name given to this art is Dramaturgy.

Texts written by ancient Greek dramatists were characterized by tragedy or comedy. Later, both styles came to be present in the same text. Some notable Greek dramatists in the composition of tragedy are Sophocles, Euripides, and Aeschylus. Aristophanes is considered the greatest representative of comedy in Ancient Greece.

German playwright Gotthold Ephraim Lessing is considered the father of modern dramaturgy, standing out for his critical writings on German society.
