Ethnic groups and population of Rio Grande do Sul

The state of Rio Grande do Sul is influenced by Europeans in many ways, ranging from customs to architecture. The Europeans populated the place from the 19th century, through the Brazilian government that motivated the arrival of such immigrants, with the intention of occupying the area that until then was unpopulated, because in this way it was favorable to be invaded and occupied by neighboring countries, therefore, they arrived to Brazil immigrants from various origins, mainly Italians, Germans and Azoreans, who soon mingled with Amerindians, Portuguese and slaves black people.

However, there are immigrants from other origins, but who represent a minority, such as the Spaniards, Poles, Russians, Jews, Arabs, Japanese, Argentines and Uruguayans.

Due to the European origin of the population, 84.7% of people are white, blacks represent 5.2%, browns 10.4% and yellows 0.4%.
